An inlay is a small filling that our Ilford dentists can fit onto the biting surface of a tooth while an onlay covers a larger area of the tooth and is better suited to bigger cavities.

Inlays and onlays are generally made from porcelain, zirconia, composite resin or
gold. These pieces are bonded to the damaged area of the tooth. Nowadays, tooth-coloured
porcelain is most often used and gives the restored tooth a more natural look, which many of
our patients prefer.

Inlays and onlays can be made in a dental laboratory by a technician, with the help of impressions taken of your teeth. While these are being made, you will wear a temporary filling. When your inlay or onlay is ready your dentist will glue it into place using a special adhesive.

An alternative treatment for restoring teeth that have broken or been weakened by decay is a crown.

It requires two appointments to complete the inlays & onlays procedure

During the first visit, the filling being replaced or the damaged or decaying area of the tooth is removed, and the tooth is prepared for the fixed prosthetic appliance. To ensure proper fit and bite, an impression of the tooth is made by the dentist, and sent to a lab for fabrication.

At the second appointment, the dentist will then make sure that the fixed prosthetic appliance fits correctly. If the fit is satisfactory, the fixed prosthetic appliance will be bonded to the tooth and polished to a smooth finish.
